GSI Services

GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES, INC. (GSI) comprises an association of  engineers, scientists and technicians rendering services  in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Studies, Geophysical and Forensic Studies and Construction Monitoring and Materials Testing.  Incorporated in 1992, GSI was formed to provide competent and timely service throughout the New England region.

Geotechnical Engineering

GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES

GSI assembles the field and laboratory data and performs various engineering analyses to provide design recommendations for the client, and prepares a written report including boring logs, lab test data, description of the investigation, and recommendations. The engineering evaluation typically concerns itself with the design and construction of foundations, pavement structures, and associated earthwork considerations.  Under specific conditions, embankment, slope stability, seismic, and settlement evaluations are accomplished.  GSI may also provide design criteria for deep foundations, temporary lateral earth support systems, dams, and dewatering systems.

Geotechnical Services include:

  • Subsurface Explorations and Foundation Studies
  • Slope Stability Studies Excavation Support System Design and Monitoring Settlement Analysis
  • Pile Foundation Design, Pile Load Testing
  • Wave Equation Analysis for Pile Driving
  • Rock Excavation Design
  • Earthwork Specification Preparation
  • Construction Dewatering Design and Review
  • Mechanically Stabilized Earth Slopes/RetainingWalls Design / Geosynthetics
  • Technical Specifications for Drilled-Shaft Design and Load Testing
  • Geotechnical-Earthquake Engineering
  • Ground Improvement

Environmental Engineering

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Environmental and hydrogeologic engineering services include Level I preliminary site assessment studies, Level II subsurface contamination investigations, human health risk assessments, hydrogeologic site characterization, and mounding analyses of large scale septic systems. Environmental studies focus on identifying the presence of oil, gasoline, and/or hazardous materials at prospective sites, site characterization, and their impacts with regard to the applicable state environmental regulations. In the event that soil and/or groundwater contamination is encountered, GSI can develop and administer a remediation operation working with specialty environmental clean-up contractors and the various state officials.

Environmental Services include:

  • Monitor Well Installation
  • Preliminary Site Assessments
  • Subsurface Contamination Investigations
  • Asbestos Studies
  • Wetlands Delineation
  • Underground Storage Tank Testing, Design and Management
  • Remediation Studies
  • Feasibility Studies
  • Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Modeling
  • Human Health Risk Assessments
  • Leach Field Mounding and Nitrate Loading Analyses

Construction Monitoring & Testing CONSTRUCTION MONITORING AND MATERIALS TESTING

During construction, GSI's technical and engineering staff is experienced to provide construction monitoring and materials testing. These services include observation and testing of earth embankment construction, pile driving operations, rock blasting, and other construction operations. Additionally, GSI has participated in the review of contractor submittals as they pertain to means and methods of geotechnical construction, particularly with earth support systems and pile driving methods.

Construction Services include:

  • Earthwork Construction Monitoring, Field Density Testing
  • Concrete Inspection, Cylinder Fabrication and Testing
  • Asphalt Placement Inspection
  • Monitoring Pile Foundation Installation
  • Masonry Construction Inspection, Prism Unit Testing
  • Vibration Monitoring during Blasting, Pile Installation, and/or Soil Compaction
  • Bituminous Concrete Testing and Inspection
  • Structural Steel Inspection and Testing
  • Fireproofing Inspection and Material Testing

Material Testing Services include:

  • Concrete Petrographic Analysis
  • Concrete, Asphalt Batch Plant Inspection
  • Soil Sieve and Proctor Testing
  • Soil One-Dimensional Consolidation Testing
  • Soil Triaxial Testing
  • Atterberg Limits Determinations
  • California Bearing Ratio
  • Falling Head, Constant Head, and Triaxial Permeability Testing
  • Direct Shear Testing

Geophysical & Forensic Studies GEOPHYSICAL AND FORENSIC STUDIES

GSI has completed numerous designs for the safe bracing of earth excavations. Braced excavation design requires knowledge of the conventional methods of earth support such as steel sheet piling, soldier piles, timber lagging, etc. More modern systems such as soil nailing and jet-grouting are also investigated; the aim being a practical, cost-effective lateral support system. GSI is qualified to provide responsive and timely design and resolution of construction issues.

Forensic Studies include:

  • Cavity detection in Concrete using Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Pachometer Surveys to Detect Reinforcing Steel
  • Asphalt/Concrete Pavement Condition Surveys
  • Earth Slope, Retaining Wall Failures
  • Concrete Restoration Techniques, Shotcrete, Drypack, etc

GSI is motivated to provide practical, cost-effective, and competent engineering and construction related services to informed clients throughout the New England area
